Platyceras fossil1

Fossil of Platyceras

Platyceras was a sea snail that lived from the Devonian period to the Permian period.

Platyceras has distinctive shape that is easily recognized. Its shell is cap-like shaped, high and broad anteriorly. The posterior portion of the shell, at the apex, is usually slightly coiled in an asymmetrical fashion.

Platyceras and other platyceratid gastropods are known for the complex symbiotic relationships they had with crinoids.
